Why we use a sliding knot instead of a clasp

A clasp is the weakest point of a bracelet and the usual reason one goes missing.

The sliding knot is really two knots travelling along the cord. Pull them and the bracelet tightens; push them back and it comes off. No spring to give, no link to part.

The knot loosens a little over time from salt and sun. When it does, damp the cord slightly and tighten the knot with your fingers — it goes back.
